An all new Star Trek e-novella from the world of Deep Space Nine, featuring the fan-favorite Federation bureau the Department of Temporal Investigations!

The dedicated agents of the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations have their work cut out for them protecting the course of history from the dangers of time travel. But the galaxy is littered with artifacts that, in the wrong hands, could threaten reality. One of the DTI's most crucial jobs is to track down these objects and lock them safely away in the Federation’s most secret and secure facility. As it happens, Agent Gariff Lucsly and his supervisor, DTI director Laarin Andos, are charged with handling a mysterious space-time portal device discovered by Starfleet. But this device turns out to be a Trojan horse, linking to a pocket dimension and a dangerous group of raiders determined to steal some of the most powerful temporal artifacts ever known...

LOVE DTI!!!!! - what do I have to do to get official permission to make “Department of Temporal Investigations” T-Shirts? Because I would TOTALLY wear them ;)

9.1/10

Nearly as fun as The Collectors, and not as broad-scaled and delightfully intricate as the first two books, but still interesting and fun. It’s lovely to see the ongoing adventures of Lucsly and Dulmur, how they grow and develop as a team of partners who clearly love and respect each other, but who are no longer together. Leave it to Ye Master of Trek Via Actual History and Physics to turn the simplicity of time dilation into a source of interesting drama and good characterization.

The whole cast of characters, the setting, and the events of the story being only peripherally related to the main ST universe is BRILLIANT - and what I mean is, none of the traditional series regulars or ships or whatever has to be present, in order for ALL of that to be present as the warp, woof, and weave of the background of the story. Subtle details like the subspace field regulators worn on the arms, the mention of Voyager’s experience in Parallax...all display an unparalleled affection for and knowledge of the Trek universe that, respectfully, I’ve only seen you, Chris Bennett, exercise with such effortlessness, fastidiousness, and cleverness...OK, maybe the Reeves-Stevenses in their so-called “Shatnerverse” novels come close, but that series is its own unique universe and clearly focused its lens on Kirk and Company.

I want more DTI but I’m at a loss to see what other avenues could be pursued beyond the clear thrust of the cliffhanger. Maybe something involving interactions with Ducane and the 29th century? That was an interesting period that we still don’t have very much information on. We’ve done the 31st (excellently handled in The Collectors), we’ve resolved the Temporal Cold War (though I would certainly be happy to see another “front” open up and get handled, maybe even some temporal espionage/intrigue leading to the Temporal Defense Network’s creation)...this is by FAR and away my favorite Star Trek novel series, favorite set of dealings with ST time travel, and a delight to consume like delicious ice cream in the moments soon after its arrival on the “shelves” of my Kindle.

Well, let me back up. Watching The Clock was hearty like a steak...I often felt like I was getting a graduate level education in temporal mechanics with that book. Forgotten History was subtle, like a fine wine/cheese pairing. The Collectors was definitely ice cream, and so was this one - just different flavors. ALL DELICIOUS.

Thanks again for this series, Christopher Bennett!!! :)

Department of Temporal Investigations Time Lock Star Trek Deep Space Nine eBook Christopher L Bennett Reviews

The Star Trek DTI series is great and these eNovellas are the perfect length to tell imaginative and fast-paced stories. A lot of story is packed into these and they are a great value for the cost.

The eNovellas released so far (this and the Collectors) have been tightly-plotted and pure fun to read. They really feel like episodes of a Star Trek DTI series and I hope that more are produced in the future.
A mysterious character needs to be foiled in this stimulating book, although truthfully I hope the fictional technologies involved never come to pass, but if you set aside disbelief in time travel and related fantasy the book holds together extremely well and leaves room for more in the future. You have to be open minded about one character's place in time and actual origin.
I adore this series, and Bennett never disappoints. Especially fun is how expertly he draws from the Trekverse backwards (and forwards), bringing together a few familiar details along with an exciting original plot. He has created a wonderful narrative out of two characters actually seen on a single episode (and only for a short time) and has brought them to life with rich, often humorous personalities along the way.
This was one of the better written books in this line and the whole series as a whole. You could see there was a good editor involved. Having read every novel (but not the cartoons) some of the quality of writing is not always the best all the way though. This one was pretty solid.

Chris Bennett is one of the stronger writers and I would easily recommend this book to anyone with any interest in continuing the voyage!
Time Lock is another wonderful installment within the fun and terrific DTI series.

While short, it's full of action, intrigue and character development. You don't necessarily have to have read the previous DTI books to enjoy this but it certainly helps to have done so in order to appreciate the terrific world - and character building that Bennett has been doing with this unique corner of the Trek universe. Here's to hoping for more installments of this hidden gem of the Trek novel lines.
Author Christoper Bennett brings us another adventure in temporal investigations. It's been six months since the incident with the Collectors and the vault get's a new artifact that happens to be a Trojan horse that once opened let's in bandits who want to raid the place. Once they begin to do so the time lock or time dilation field activates and slows time down within the vault. As I read this I kept thinking of the Stargate SG-1 episodes where they used the same type of field to slow down the replicators. But this is a good short read with a little twist of an ending that will make you want to read the next book in the series.
It's awfully short, even shorter than The Collectors. I'm actually a fair bit disappointed, but only because what little there was was so good. Despite its brevity, it tells an interesting story, gives our favorite characters a bit of development, and ends with an intriguing sequel hook. I really hope to see more from this series, because I've loved it from the start, but if it's going to take another 2 years to produce another novella of this size, I fear for its future.

Time Lock is a great book that has everything I've come to love about the DTI series, just not enough of it to really draw the reader in and give them a satisfying conclusion.
